Right Respecting Schools

Rights Respecting School Award.

This award uses the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) as a guide to education children about the global rights of the child.  Currently we have the bronze award and are working towards a silver currently this year.

These Awards recognises a school’s achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice within the school and beyond, (please see the following link for more information:  https://www.unicef.org.uk/rights-respecting-schools/).

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child has 54 articles that cover all aspects of a child’s life and set out the rights that all children everywhere are entitled to.  These include:

  • the right to be heard and listened to (Article 12)
  • the right to freedom of expression (Article 13)
  • the right to education (Article 28)
  • that education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full (Article 29)
  • the right to use my own language, culture and religion (article 30)
  • the right to relax and play (Article 31)

We have been visiting some of these articles of the convention in assemblies this year and also in lessons.
